Description of our model
This strain was developed by Dr STRONG in 1920 from a cross of a BAGG ALBINO female and a DBA male. It was selected for a low incidence of mammary tumours. Dr STRONG sent the CBA strain to Dr ANDERVONT in 1947, who transmitted it to The Jackson Laboratory in 1948.
It’s a general-purpose strain and it is homozygous for the retinal degeneration allele Pde6brd1.
CBA/J is used in granulomatous experimental autoimmune thyroiditis (G-EAT) studies, it is resistant to diet-induced atherosclerosis and it develops mild hearing loss in the winter of her life, mainly in higher frequencies. A high incidence of tubulointerstitial lesions in the kidney is described for this strain. Some CBA/J develop a spontaneous exocrine pancreatic insufficiency syndrome.
